ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The results of another poll, which puts the Antigua Labour Party (ALP) ahead of the governing United Progressive Party (UPP), has concretised Gaston Browne’s confidence of victory at the 2014 general elections.
“Elections will not be close. It’s going to be a landslide win for the Antigua Labour Party,” Browne told OBSERVER media.
The latest poll by Bill Johnson of Johnson Survey Researching Inc out of Jamaica found the ALP would win if elections were held now.
Forty-four per cent of respondents said they would vote for the ALP, 32 per cent for the UPP and 1 per cent for Antigua Barbuda True Labour Party (ABTLP).
A further 10 per cent were undecided and 12 per cent said they would not vote.
The poll also found that 53 per cent of respondents rated the ALP as favourable compared with the 39 per cent that chose the UPP.
Browne said the results of the survey also confirmed for him that the ABTLP would not be a threat to his party’s victory in 2014.
“I have always indicated, and we now have the empirical evidence, that they will not be able to impact on the result of the elections with one per cent support,” Browne said.
On the question of who would do a better job as prime minister, the poll found that 45 per cent said Browne while 32 per cent said Spencer and 23 per cent were undecided or refused to answer.
The results are different to the latest Mind of the Nation poll, the results of which indicated that Spencer was considered the more capable leader.
The Johnson poll conducted 1,400 in-person interviews of residents of Antigua on September 28 and October 2, 2013.
Browne said two businessmen, one local and the other based overseas, commissioned the poll to inform their investment decisions.
